Helping Premature Babies

Every year, around 15 million children across the world are born too early. In these premature babies, the interplay of lungs, circulation, and oxygen balance is unstable. This brings a risk of oxygen deficiency, which can lead to brain damage or even death. With the support of Wyss Zurich, the UZH spin-off OxyPrem is now developing a device that uses high-precision technology to measure the oxygen balance in the tissue. OxyPrem consists of soft silicone and is attached to the baby’s head. Integrated light sensors can then take highly accurate readings of the oxygen supply in the brain and thereby help doctors prevent severe developmental disorders.
