Small Electronic Brain

Our brain is a miracle of evolution and beats any computer in terms of energy efficiency. Giacomo Indiveri at the Institute of Neuroinformatics of UZH and ETH Zurich wants to utilize the characteristics of the human brain. The spin-off aiCTX, which he founded with two partners, develops neuromorphic chips that imitate the functional principles of biological neurons and synapses. DynapSE2 (pictured here) is the company’s latest processor and consists of 1,024 artificial neurons. It is a basic building block for developing intelligent sensors and smart household appliances.
