Hundreds of millions of people worldwide suffer from genetic diseases, yet only about 5% have access to FDA-approved therapies. CRISPR, a groundbreaking biomedical technology, enables precise DNA editing and has the potential to cure these diseases at their source. However, despite its promise, current CRISPR tools can effectively correct only about 20% of disease-causing mutations.

Kim’s UZH Entrepreneur Fellowship project, Nerai Biosciences, is pioneering the development of highly functional novel CRISPR proteins to tackle the most pressing medical needs that remain beyond the reach of current genome editing technologies.

By using programmable biology and harnessing the power of continuous evolution, Nerai creates novel editors of unprecedented precision, redefining what is achievable in the safety, efficiency, and targetability of gene therapies. Nerai focuses on developing and commercializing uniquely differentiated proprietary genomic medicines for ophthalmic and liver genetic disorders.
