Sie ist die Toblerone unter den Zahnpasten: Kaum ein Zahnreinigungsprodukt hat so viel Swissness wie die Elmex. Entwickelt hat sie Hans R. Mühlemann zusammen mit der Basler-Firma GABA Ende der 1950er-Jahre.  Der Zahnmedizin-Professor an der UZH beschäftigte sich damals mit der Prävention von Zahnleiden. In klinischen Studien zeigte er, dass sich mit einem Aminfluorid-Zusatz in der Zahnpasta das Entstehen von Karies massiv einschränken liess. 1963 kam dann die Elmex auf den Markt.

It’s the Toblerone among toothpastes – not many dental hygiene products are as Swiss as Elmex. It was developed in the late 1950s by Hans R. Mühlemann, in collaboration with Basel-based firm GABA. A professor of dentistry at UZH, Mühlemann’s work focused on the prevention of dental health problems. He demonstrated in clinical trials that the addition of amine fluoride to toothpaste could massively reduce the development of tooth decay. Elmex was brought to market in 1963.
